We took the 96-minute Taiwan High Speed Rail train from Taipei to Kaohsiung with the sole purpose of visiting the two traveling exhibitions of Taneda Youhei at the Pier-2 Art Center, where an old warehouse complex of the Port of Kaohsiung were transformed into performance and exhibition venues.

The first exhibition we visited was the Petit Louvre exhibition that was originally the 2008 annual special exhibition of the Ghibli Museum at Mitaka, Tokyo. To our astonishment, the exhibition that displayed masterpieces of the Louvre from the point of view of children was expended with more art works when it moved to Kaohsiung.

The second exhibition was the Cinema Arts of Taneda Youhei, which showcased Taneda Youhei’s art designs in various films. The two-part exhibition opened with the Tokyo Club in Kill Bill Vol. 1 and ended with life-size recreation of Arrietty’s room in The Borrower Arrietty, introduced the western and eastern worlds created by Taneda Youhei in various films.

[2012/11/09 Update]

After finished their tours at Kaohsiung, both exhibitions have been moved to Taipei. The Cinema Arts of Taneda Youhei exhibition was moved to Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, and the life-size biplane and artillery models used in filming Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale were display outside of the venue.
